Animal Bedding For over 60 years PJ Murphy’s lines of all-natural animal bedding have been the gold standard by which all other animal beddings are judged.  Whether it’s for use in a laboratory, a breeding colony, or at home with your own pet, our bedding is consistently rated the best. Our high level of quality begins with the types of wood that we use.  We start with only the most select hardwoods.  These trees are taken from areas that have never been sprayed with unhealthy pesticides or herbicides.  When a tree is felled, new trees are planted to ensure that these forests continue to thrive.  We never use pine, cedar, or other softwoods because their unhealthy organic compounds can cause distress to your animals. Our hardwoods are transported via closed van trailers from sawmills directly to our production facilities.  Once there we maintain a closed system, meaning that there is no possibility of contamination of our products.  All of our animal beddings are heat treated and rotary drum dried, reaching a temperature of 1200 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.  This reduces the moisture content to 8% (+/- 2%) and kills harmful bacteria. We then convey the product, by air, through various sifters and screeners until the wood reaches a final particle size.  The product is then refined again, through the use of additional, innovative and unique equipment, that enables us to further increase our screening and aspirating.   We offer standard product specifications for each of our products, or we can create a product that is specific to your needs.  All of our products are virtually dust free. Our customers include many of the top research facilities, universities, leading pharmaceutical companies and finest breeders of laboratory animals in the world. We have supplied SANI-CHIPS® to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, the National Center for Toxicological Research in Jefferson, Arkansas, and the National Cancer Institute, to name a few.  Currently, every major animal breeding facility in the United States uses all-natural wood animal bedding. Many of our customers annually inspect and approve our facilities.  We frequently have our products tested by approved private testing laboratories to insure that our products continue to exceed the standards of NIH, NCTR, NTP and the highest standards of all, our own. 2006 P.J.
